CONNECTING
Youth Club
In August 2007, My Sisters started working with the young people in the area. They gather every day after school and on Saturdays. The young people are between 10 and 20 years old, and in the youth club they are offered counselling, lectures, extra teaching in English, games, sports and more. They talk about how to prevent HIV and how to deal with it and be aware of it in their age. The main thing, though, is the focus on the social life. Even though the youth club just started, as many as 25-30 young people already joined. The two leaders, aged 24 and 25 years old, are new in My Sisters but experienced in youth work from other jobs, courses and programmes. Above everything, they describe the youth club as life sharing and mind refreshing, and both are very committed to the work.
Advocacy worker: Kasaynesh
In order to keep up with our community development, My Sisters have a full time advocacy worker. She visits both organizations and the authorities in the community.
It is important to My Sisters to learn from others, not to do something that others do better, and also to be updated on newly occurring needs. Through our advocacy worker contact is established and often also revisits are planned.
Ethiopian culture is very much based on relationships; this reaches into work life also. It means that in order to cooperate, relationship is important. Because of this, our advocacy worker will make a point of coming by the Kebele (the sub community) both to meet the workers there, but also to let them know what My Sisters is doing.
