DAY CARE SERVICE
In Ethiopian culture, women traditionally work in their homes or bring their youngest children along when working. So there is no precedence for having any need to have others to look after one's children.
Clients of My Sisters mostly take up day labour, such as carrying water or stones in constructions sites. Some work in the local market, wash clothes or bake and sell injera (the national dish, a big pancake baked of fermented dough made from tef).
Having children makes it hard for these women to keep working, but they need the job because they need the income. This is the reason why My Sisters offer free day care service to clients' children, aged four months to four years.
The children receive good care, nutritious food, a bath, clean clothes and a day full of games and friends. They learn social skills and get everything children need at this age.
On a regular basis, the mothers are taught about childcare, nutrition, hygiene and much more.
