TRAINING
Homework and extra classes
Public schools are big and so are the classes. In one classroom there may very well be as many as 60 students.
For some of our clients' children school is a huge challenge. At home the time and space for studying is most limited, so My Sisters have started a class for students who need help with homework. Extra English teaching is also offered.
Students come right after school and have a hot meal before the tutor starts teaching.
During the rainy season from June through September there are classes all day, allowing for more students to be admitted, one group in the morning and another in the afternoon.
Always the class starts with a meal, good social time and the right basis for learning.

Health promoters
Future does not look very promising for the girls who do not do so well in school and perhaps drop out some time between 7th and12th grade.
All through their lives most of these girls have been told over and over again, that they are useless and hopeless. But My Sisters do not think so. There may be numerous reasons why these girls did not make it at school, and surely they can learn!
My Sisters have prepared a one-year training course for this group of girls. The course includes lessons on first aid, nutrition, childcare, family planning, hygiene etc. The students are taught half the day in a class of 12 students. All are seen, and all are heard.
During the training all students take turn using their new knowledge, teaching the clients waiting for services in the mornings.
The idea behind this is to build up capacity. As these girls learn and practice how to communicate this knowledge, they impart knowledge to their community. In this way they help their community to prevent diseases, improve hygiene and be an encouragement to their neighbour.
At completion of the course, everyone receives a certificate with which they can apply for further training or for a job. Only few months after graduating, more than half of the 2007 class had found work in various daycares or NGOs.
